South Africa’s Kevin Anderson was knocked out of the US Open after a crushing straight-sets defeat to Dominic Thiem on Sunday. 

Thiem advanced to the quarter-finals without breaking a sweat against last year’s runner-up. He did not face a single break-point. Anderson struggled against the powerful hitting of Thiem, who was also able to return the South African’s power-serve.

The first set was a tight affair with both men holding serve with relative ease before Thiem got the vital break in the 11th game. He served out the following game to take the first 7-5.

Thiem carried his momentum into the second set by breaking Anderson in the very first game. He managed to break Anderson for a second time on his way to a 6-2 win.

The South African had no answer to Thiem’s serve; try as he might, he could not muster up a single break-point.

Thiem had a chance to break in the seventh game, but Anderson managed to save it and stay in the contest.

There was no further opportunities for either man as the third set went to a tie-break. Thiem dominated it by winning three points in a row off Anderson’s serve to book his spot in the quarter-finals with a 7-5, 6-2, 7-6 (2) victory.
