The rain put a damper on proceedings in Bridgetown as the second ODI between Windies Women and South Africa Women was abandoned after the first innings.
After a long delay, the match began with the Windies winning the toss and deciding to field first in an encounter that was sure to have rain heavily involved, with it already being reduced to just 38 overs a side.
Lizelle Lee (22 off 29 balls, three fours, one six) and Sune Luus (20 off 23 balls, one six) each had good starts early in the innings but soon fell to the brilliant bowling of Deandra Dottin, who starred with the ball, finishing with figures of 3-29 in her eight overs. It was captain Dane van Niekerk’s half-century that stood out as her 67-run partnership with vice-captain Chloe Tryon (37 off 42 balls, two fours) was the foundation of the innings.
Van Niekerk’s run-out on 53 off 68 balls heralded a lower-order collapse as South Africa lost four wickets in the final five overs of the innings with the addition of just 25 runs. With the encounter set up beautifully, it was a shame to see the match abandoned during the innings break due to the weather.
