Benni McCarthy: I want to win it for the players

Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy admits that his side does not want to be known as the team that reaches finals without lifting the trophy, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.

The 40-year-old coach is currently in the process of preparing his side for their MTN8 final encounter against SuperSport United at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

This will be a repeat of last year’s final in Durban which saw the Citizens suffer a 4-2 defeat on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time at the same venue.

McCarthy insists that his ‘boys’ are ‘hungry as ever’ as he hopes his side will be lucky the second time around.

‘I want to win it for the players, you know they deserve it, they put in all the hard work, they put in the effort and they deserve to be in two finals. [It was unfortunate] for the last time, but I think this time, you don’t want to become that team that gets to finals and then they can’t get over the line, so we want to put all our effort and energy into this one,’ McCarthy told the media.

‘I hope my boys will be as hungry as ever. The atmosphere has been really good, better than I expected. So hopefully we can get to that road where we have all our top players, we want to have them all fit.’

Cape Town City will square off against SuperSport United in the MTN8 final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday with kick-off set for 7pm.
