Springbok contracts could be scrapped from the 2020 season, with players receiving bigger Test match fees instead.
According to Rapport newspaper, there would no longer be joint contracts for certain players, which sees SA Rugby paying 70% and a provincial union 30% of their contract.
Players with joint contracts currently earn an average of R3.7-million just from SA Rugby, who spend around R60-million a year on 16 players.
While those in a Springbok match 23 currently receive match fees, under the new system, the amount would be increased to anything between R250,000 and R400,000.
SA Rugby director of rugby and Bok coach Rassie Erasmus said the proposal was just an ‘idea’ at this stage and no final decision has yet been taken.
