Captain Faf du Plessis has highlighted the performances of fast bowler Dale Steyn and fielder David Miller, as South Africa beat Australia by six wickets in Sunday’s first ODI in Perth.
The Proteas limited the Australians to 152 all out, before surpassing the target with 124 deliveries to spare.
Steyn was named Player of the Match for his superb figures of 2-18, while Miller’s direct-hit run-out to get rid of all-rounder Pat Cummins was a breathtaking piece of fielding.
‘This was very good. We were exceptional with the ball and in the field. It was a very good day at the office. It is brilliant to have Dale around. It’s good to have that X-factor in your bowling attack,’ said Du Plessis.
‘I like to take the positive option. Sometimes it was tricky out there, with the odd one bouncing, but they batted nicely. Dave’s run-out was exceptional and it was nice to see the fielding click. I’d have liked us to be a little more clinical.’
Du Plessis finished on 10 not out after openers Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks had struck 47 and 44 respectively.
The second ODI will be played in Adelaide on Friday and the third in Hobart on Sunday. A one-off T20I will follow in Carrara.
