Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has insisted there was a reason a Downs fan went after Orlando Pirates assistant coach Rulani Mokwena but he added that he does not condone the encroachment.
The two South African giants played out to a goalless draw at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday afternoon, but the main talking point occurred off the pitch with about 25 minutes played.
A scuffle broke out when a Sundowns fan somehow managed to bypass security and enter the Pirates technical area to confront former Downs assistant coach Mokwena.
Mokwena was understandably incensed and his reaction sparked a melee between the two benches when Mosimane seemingly jumped in to defend his supporter.
Speaking to SuperSport TV after the match, Mosimane insisted that people must think about the reasons why a fan would have been emotional enough to react in such a manner.
‘It always happens between these two big teams. A supporter went to Rulani which is unnecessary, that’s what I heard. But you also have to understand what creates people to go to Rulani,’ said the former Bafana Bafana coach.
‘You know the story. This is what’s going to happen if things like that are going to happen. Some people are not going to think rationally like we think, they take it in a different way.
‘We don’t condone this. It’s not right. We don’t condone also when Pirates were here they got 6-0 and pulled the cables, it’s not right. But the game went well, it’s a good game.’
