Chippa United coach Joel Masutha says he is confident of turning the club’s fortunes around, saying that he can do the job based on the quality within the squad.
Masutha returns to the Port Elizabeth based-outfit where he served as second-in-command to the late Roger Sikhakhane when the side gained promotion to the Absa Premiership in the 2013/14 season.
The former Black Leopards coach will take over the reins at the Chili Boys after former coach Eric Tinkler was sacked following a poor run of results.
‘I only know that I will be with the team until the end of the season‚ with an option to extend‚’ he told TimesLive.
‘I’m going back to a team where I have worked before, and although the challenge is different because I am now a head coach which brings more responsibility‚ I know the people at the club and how the team operates.
‘I’m excited to work with this group of players and I have no doubt that the team is brimming with quality. It will be interesting for me‚ but I’m sure we will turn the corner.
‘They have not been playing badly‚ but the results were not forthcoming.
‘The football they were playing was good and so there is no challenge for me in terms of quality‚ it is just to get the best out of them,’ he added.
Masutha’s first game in charge of Chippa sees him come up against Benni McCarthy’s Cape Town City outfit, and the mentor jokingly stated that he does not have fond memories of playing against the Citizens.
‘The last time I played against Benni‚ after the match I was fired,’ he stated.
‘I must make sure we get something out of the match next week.
‘Benni has transformed that team‚ the football they are playing is among the best in the league. I’m very happy for him‚ but I need him to lose,’ he concluded.
