Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango will miss the Caf Champions League clash with Leones Vegetarianos due to a knee injury.
Sundowns come into Wednesday’s fixture with a 2-0 aggregate lead after victory in Equatorial Guinee last week, but will be without their number one goalkeeper, the Chloorkop-based club have confirmed.
The Sundowns official website revealed that the keeper sustained ligament damage after a clash with SuperSport United striker James Keene in their Tshwane derby win at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.
Onyango has proved vital to Sundowns’ success over the last few years and has been missed on the occasion he has not been available to play.
Pitso Mosimane will have the experienced Zambian Kennedy Mweene and ex-SuperSport keeper Reyaad Pieterse as his back-ups. Although, after Pieterse made a number of errors when deputising for Onyango, it is thought that Mosimane is keen to hand Mweene an opportunity.
The Ugandan keeper’s injury sees him join a list, including Brazilian defender Ricardo Nascimento (hip), out-of-favour winger George Lebese (knee) and striker Thokozani Sekotlong (ankle), who are unavailable for the clash.
Tiyani Mabunda will also have to go through a late fitness test to determine whether he can play in the return leg of a preliminary round tie at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
