Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has revealed that Daniel Akpeyi will start the next league game, despite his blunder against Polokwane City.
After a season where Chiefs fans have had to watch Virgil Vries commit a number of costly errors, this prompted a move to the market where the Amakhosi brought in the Nigerian international.
Akpeyi, however, made a costly error in the 1-1 draw away to Rise and Shina last Saturday, which triggered similar criticism to what Vries faced only a few weeks ago.
Middendorp didn’t hide his unhappiness at the error, which now sees his side fall nine points behind league leaders Bidvest Wits, but has admitted that Akpeyi will keep his place in the side for their clash with Highlands Park at the Moses Mabhida Stadium this weekend, because he is their ‘league keeper’.
‘No, it’s not about [the one mistake]. We’ll observe it during the week, and we have the next game on the weekend [against Highlands Park], and then we will see,’ said the German.
‘Actually, it’s not fooling around – Daniel is the goalkeeper in the league and Bruce [Bvuma] is playing the Nedbank Cup, that’s where we are standing at the moment.
‘You’ll understand, please, that at the time directly after a game I can confirm it.’
