Kaizer Chiefs defender Daniel Cardoso believes that if his side can maintain their current form, teams will begin to fear them.
Amakhosi extended their unbeaten run in the Absa Premiership to four games after they came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Cape Town City at Newlands Stadium last week.
The win kept Ernst Middendorp’s side at the top of the league table after accumulating 10 points from their first four games of the season, having won three and played to one draw.
Speaking on his goal against City, Cardoso told his club’s official website: ‘When I scored, I felt we were back in the game. We were knocking on the door and our efforts paid off. When the goal went in, the team’s spirits were lifted … the fans who were phenomenal also received a boost. They kept us going and eventually we got the win.’
The Amakhosi defender revealed that the goal brought back memories of scoring his first for Chiefs against Ajax Cape Town back in February 2017.
‘In 2017 at Athlone Stadium I scored when we were 1-0 down against Ajax. It was also a header to make it 1-1. Back then we went on to hit the post and failed to win the game and I was just thinking that this time we need to win the game. Although it never really crossed my mind during the game, I am pleased that the team got a win in a game that I scored in,’ he added.
Cardoso says he is pleased with the result after Amakhosi came from a goal down to collect all three points against the Citizens.
‘Picking up points away against Cape Town City is good for us. If we keep playing like this, teams will fear us. We were pushing hard for the equaliser and then the win. We spoke ahead of the game about taking advantage when the opportunity comes – we discuss a lot beforehand and it was good to put all that planning to good use in the game,’ Cardoso said.
‘Coming back shows we were ready for the fight and we have character. We showed the same spirit against Highlands Park. It shows that this team is about sticking together. We are ready for the fight. This fire and spirit will take us far.
‘This is our best start since the 2014-15 season. Hopefully, we can continue in this way. Starting strong and collecting points early on is good. We need to collect as many points as we can in the first half of the season, which will be vital for us as the season goes on.’
Kaizer Chiefs will be hoping to extend their unbeaten run in the Absa Premiership when they welcome Polokwane City to the FNB Stadium on 14 September, with kick-off set for 6pm.
