Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp says his side dominated proceedings against Cape Town City in their Telkom Knockout Cup victory at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.

The Glamour Boys secured their place in the quarter-finals of the knockout competition after beating the Citizens 4-2 on penalties in the Mother City.

Amakhosi had a glorious chance to open the scoring when they were awarded a penalty just before the half-hour mark after a shot by Khama Billiat struck the arm of City defender Taariq Fielies.

Daniel Cardoso stepped up but blazed his spot kick high and wide of goal and Middendorp feels that was the turning point in the game.

‘It was expected to be an intense game,’ Middendorp told his club’s official website.

‘We knew they were going to come hard at us. We dominated in the initial stages of the game, but I thought missing the penalty slowed us down a bit. Credit, though, must go to the team because we fought until the end.

‘After missing the penalty, we allowed them to come at us.

‘It is part of the game and it happens to the best in the world. Moments later we conceded against the run of play. It is good that we regrouped and came back strongly after making a series of changes.’

Kaizer Chiefs will now turn their attention to their mouthwatering Absa Premiership clash with Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday, with kick-off set for 3:30pm.
