Kaizer Chiefs forward Bernard Parker believes that education is key as the forward looks to a future beyond football by studying part-time.
The 33-year-old forward has been a stalwart at Naturena for many years and although he’s showing no signs of slowing down or getting ready to hang up his boots, he has begun to plan for the eventuality of retirement.
Parker has featured in all nine of his side’s games so far this season, wearing the captain’s armband on a number of occasions. But he may now face a stint on the sidelines after picking up an injury against Cape Town City over the weekend.
The injury, though, will allow the forward to focus on his upcoming exams. He has revealed to his club’s official website that he is studying for his higher certificate in sports marketing management.
‘It is going well, and I am enjoying myself. The good thing about it is that I am studying part-time. I do make sure I make time for books in between family and football, and it is important to maintain the balance in all aspects of life. Education is key. If you are not keen to study for careers outside of sports, then make yourself wiser within the many careers relating to sport,’ Parker said.
‘You have come a long way to get so far. Be proud of yourself, trust the process and enjoy the journey … make the best of it and good luck to the class of 2019,’ he added, looking to motivate students across the country.
Amakhosi coach Ernst Middendorp now has to wait for feedback on the extent of Parker’s injury as the Glamour Boys look ahead to their mammoth clash with Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday.
