Former Proteas batsman Hashim Amla turned 37 years old on Tuesday this week.
Amla retired form international cricket last year, but has since remained in the game at domestic level.
What has Amla been doing since retiring from Test, ODI and T20I cricket?
He worked with the Cape Town Blitz as a batting consultant in the 2019 Mzansi Super League and also played for the Falcon Hunters in the Qatar T10 League and Karnataka Tuskers in the Abu Dhabi T10. He then represented the Khulna Tigers in the Bangladesh Premier League before joining Peshawar Zalmi as a mentor in the Pakistan Super League.
What’s next for Amla?
Amla, like former Proteas teammates Vernon Philander and Farhaan Behardien, have signed Kolpak contracts to play county cricket in the United Kingdom. Philander is off to Somerset and Behardien to Durham. Amla will play with former Proteas pace ace Morne Morkel at Surrey, who also have England quartet Ben Foakes, Sam Curran, Ben Curran and Rory Burns in their ranks.
Did Amla retire from international cricket too soon?
Amla, arguably, retired from international cricket at the right time. His exit came after the 2019 World Cup. Some schools of thought believe he should have ended a prolific but waning career before the World Cup, which would have allowed fellow opening batsman Reeza Hendricks’ selection.
‘I don’t really miss international cricket one bit. Everything has its time and fortunately I had a very good time with international cricket. Everything moves on eventually. You have to stop at some stage. I am fortunate that I really got the chance to play and stop at the right time,’ said Amla earlier this year.
