Sports company PUMA has created new home and away jerseys for South African football club Mamelodi Sundowns, with the words ’50 Years’ below the redesigned team logo, which marks an important milestone.
The replica kit available to fans is the first of a number of drops of product planned for the new season.
The kit is in refreshed colours of yellow, green and blue, true to the colours of the Brazil national team from which Mamelodi Sundowns earned their nickname: The Brazilians. The nickname extends far beyond shared colours, as Masandawana play with an African-flavoured Samba style inspired by their South American brothers.
‘PUMA is honoured to be able to continue to partner and support Mamelodi Sundowns, a club which has always lived the ideals of The Beautiful Game. Every match is a carnival with the players bringing fans to their feet, to applaud moments of artistry and to celebrate yet another exhilarating victory,’ said Brett Bellinger, PUMA South Africa Marketing Director. ‘Samba, Mamelodi Sundowns, Samba!’
The players shirt is a slim-fit cut with a Johnny-collar reminiscent of 1970s-style playing jerseys (to symbolically link the jersey to the era in which the club was established) and is made from 100% recycled polyester. It has venting on the front and the word Sundowns printed on the back of the collar as a special treatment for the players. The replica shirt for fans is a regular fit and has a Mamelodi Sundowns applique badge with the ’50 Years’ wording and an embroidered PUMA logo.
‘It’s a momentous year for the club and the 2020-21 jersey portrays a new direction in our history with the launch of the re-designed logo and the celebration of 50 years of evolution, aspiration, and determination. Our partners at PUMA have created a timeless kit that salutes the teams of the past as we continue to forge a new future. It pays homage to our humble beginnings in Mamelodi, while the bold Brazilian accents highlight our continued desire to play entertaining and revolutionary football,’ said Mamelodi Sundowns spokesperson Alex Shakoane.
‘Although 2020 has been eclipsed by a pandemic that has forced the young to avoid their elders, this shirt is a tribute that connects all supporters, young and old. This year is a milestone for Mamelodi Sundowns, and we are ecstatic that we can continue our journey with PUMA as they always deliver jerseys with the most advanced global technology, giving our players the edge.’
The home and away shirts retail for R799 each at PUMA.com, PUMA stores, Studio 88, Sportsmans Warehouse, The Cross Trainer, Totalsports and selected retailers from 4 September. The home jersey is also available for women and children. Fans can also purchase the stadium jersey for R699 and the stadium jacket for R1,499 from PUMA.com and Studio 88.
PUMA and Mamelodi Sundowns first joined forces in July 2016, with PUMA having licensing rights to develop technical kits, replica and fanwear to match the club’s dynamic and stylish football philosophy.
Since then, the club has dominated South African football winning consecutive ABSA Premiership titles, the African Champions League, Caf Super Cup and representing Africa in the Fifa Club World Cup.
Mamelodi Sundowns are part of an impressive PUMA Football family which includes Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City, AC Milan, Valencia, Olympique de Marseille and national teams such as Italy, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Uruguay, Ivory Coast, Austria, Egypt, Ghana, Senegal and Serbia.
