Mamelodi Sundowns cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over Polokwane City on Wednesday evening to remain on Chiefs’ tail and take the title race to the final day. SoccerClub writer DEAN WORKMAN selects the main talking points from the encounter.
Sundowns took the lead after a tight opening 30 minutes through Anele Ngcongca before Themba Zwane doubled their lead just before the break with a superb solo effort.
Sundowns managed to see out the game with Ali Meeza wrapping things up for the Brazilians in second-half injury time.
Pitso Mosimane’s men are level on points with Kaizer Chiefs heading into the last game and only sit behind them on goal difference, with the gap only three goals now.
Here are the main talking points from the game:
1) Zwane hitting form when it counts
While the Bafana Bafana international seemingly struggled since the restart, he now hitting top form heading into Downs’ final game where they would likely need a big win to seal the title. Zwane has scored two goals in his last three games and will be hoping to add to his tally and fire his side to the title.

2) Sundowns showing Championship mentality
They may have not fired on all cylinders since the restart but after clawing back the massive lead which Chiefs held for most of the season, the Brazilians now sit one game away from securing a third successive PSL title. It may take a massive win against Black Leopards on Saturday where they will get the chance to show everyone just how Mosimane runs his ship.
3) Polokwane set to go down
With the heavy defeat, Rise and Shine’s time in the PSL looks all but done. They will need to hope Baroka lose dismally against Chiefs on Saturday and pull a rabbit out of the hat against Wits themselves to have any chance of avoiding automatic relegation.
4) Sundowns big squad getting tested
Due to the intensities facing Sundowns since the restart, Mosimane has had to make full use of his squad with a number of youngsters even getting consistent game time. ‘Jingles’ has always spoken of his squad size in relation to their Caf Champions League commitments and now as they look to snatch the league from Chiefs, the whole squad are playing their part.
What a performance from the boys, claiming a monumentous victory and taking the title race to the last day!🏆
Let’s go Masandawana!👊👊👊
