For the second-successive week a South African golfer has won the European Tour after Garrick Higgo claimed victory at the Open de Portugal on Sunday afternoon.

Portugal once again proved a happy hunting ground for South Africa, as Higgo followed on from George Coetzee’s victory at the Portugal Master last week, by grabbing top spot at the Royal Obidos Resort.

Higgo took the field by storm during Sunday’s action and was on a mission from the start, sinking five birdies on the front nine, while adding two more as he came home, including a valuable three on the final hole, to conclude with a spectacular 7-under 65.

It was enough for Higgo to edge Spain’s Pep Angles by a single stroke after a tight finish in the end where the South African waited in the clubhouse before being crowned champion with a winning score of 19 under par.

What made it even more brilliant was the fact that Higgo sunk a total of 13 birdies in the last two rounds of the event, without dropping a single shot.

The victory was also the young man from Stellenbosch’s first win on the European Tour after he won Sunshine Tour Rookie of the Year last season.

Coetzee, on the other hand, continued his good form and managed to in 3rd spot after another successful week on the course.
