Ernie Els once again mastered the fine margins in the game of golf after sinking a monster 40-foot putt on Sunday to win the SAS Championship.

But that is a far cry from a couple of weeks ago when the Big Easy failed to make a three-foot putt to reach a playoff at another PGA Champions Tour event.

Els’ impressive performance over the weekend gave him a one-shot victory over Colin Montgomerie, also propelling the four-time Major champion to top spot in the Charles Schwab Cup standings.

‘It’s a crazy game. A couple of weeks ago I missed a pretty short putt to get in a playoff and today I made a 40-footer, so figure that one out,’ Els said jokingly after his victory.

Els, though, made a few small tweaks to his shorter game thanks to Mark O’Meara, who saw he was struggling somewhat with his putting.

‘At Pebble, I was a bit uncomfortable on the shorter putts and my technique was not quite what it should be. I had some time to think about it and work on it and I mentioned it to Mark O’Meara, who saw me after the first day where I missed some shorter ones again. So, we’ve talked about and we played so much golf together, I mean I’ve known him for 25 years, so he gave me a little something to work on and here we are. Got to thank him,’ added Els.
