Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies made history on Friday evening as they became the inaugural Caf Women’s Champions League winners after defeating Hasaacas Ladies of Ghana 2-0 in the final.
The Brazilians came into the game full of confidence following their impressive displays in the group stages, followed up by a clutch performance in the semi-finals.
The South Africans started on the front foot, looking to take the game to Hasaacas Ladies as they struck the crossbar in 15th minute from a set piece. Then, moments later, Lerato Kgasago went close with a dipping strike that sailed just over the crossbar.
Ghana, however, were not going to just sit back and threatened the Sundowns box with Rahama Jafaru going down from a challenge inside the box in the 24th minute, but VAR reviewing did not spot any infringement.
Bafana Ba Style eventually grabbed the opener in the 33rd minute from a slick attacking move, as Mgcoyi went through on goal on the right side of the box and played a square pass tapped home by Chuene Morifi at the far post.
Hasaacas had a glorious chance just before the hour mark after as Letona Daweti went through one on one with goalkeeper Grace Buoadu but she miscued her lobbed effort.
Mgcoyi eventually doubled the lead for Banyana Ba Style in the 65th minute with a composed strike past Buoadu after being slipped clean through on goal after a delightful through ball from Nonhlanhla Mthandi.
Hasaacas had a chance to pull a goal back in the last 12 minutes from a free kick just outside the box, but Perpetual Agyekum saw her shot palmed over the crossbar by Sundowns stopper Andile Dlamini.
Sundowns Ladies may have received a red card when Regina Mogolola, who had just come on, was sent off for a lunging tackle following a VAR review, but Banyana Ba Style were out sight and managed to hold on and become African champions.
