Orlando were eliminated from the Nedbank Cup after suffering a 5-4 defeat on penalties by Marumo Gallants at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Richard Ofori was called into action as early as the first minute when he came off his line to make a stop as the home side pushed forward.

Gallants continued their forward onslaught and were awarded a penalty in the 19th minute. Ofori guessed correctly but Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo placed the ball just out of his reach to grab the lead.

Pirates eventually drew the game level on the half-hour mark after Bandile Shandu snuck behind the defence to fire his effort past Gallants keeper King Ndlovu.

Ndlovu was called into action in the 39th minute to deny Deon Hotto’s effort at goal after some interplay with Thabang Monare, with half time coming on level pegging.

The visitors nearly took the lead early in the second half when they were awarded a free kick. Hotto struck the woodwork from the set piece before Peprah hit the ball straight from the rebound.

The Buccaneers opted to bring on fresh legs on the hour mark with Tshegofatso Mabasa replacing Zakhele Lepasa.

Dlamini had a chance to hand Pirates the lead in the 70th minute but saw his left-footed shot from the edge of the area careening just wide of target.

Gallants attacked the Pirates penalty area in the 84th minute through Ngema but saw his attack thwarted by Mosele.

Molongoane had a chance to win the game for Gallants in stoppage time, but Ofori made a comfortable save to deny the attacker as extra time arrived after the game ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Neither side could find the winning goal after 120 minutes of play, forcing the game to be settled in a penalty shootout.

Gallants managed to secure their place in the next round of the competition after keeper Ndlovu fired them home with his penalty to end the shootout.
