Kaizer Chiefs missed the chance to go second on the DStv Premiership table after playing out to a goalless draw with TS Galaxy at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Stuart Baxter made only two changes to his side that beat Chippa United in their last game as Cole Alexander and Keagan Dolly came in to replace Phathutshedzo Nange and the suspended Khama Billiat, respectively.
Dolly had the first chance after five minutes of play when he unleashed a shot at goal, but Galaxy keeper Melusi Nkazimulo Buthelezi punched his effort away.
Dolly had another two opportunities to hand his side the lead in the ninth and 12th minutes, but the Chiefs attacker first fired his effort wide of goal before his second effort sailed over the crossbar.
Galaxy had a chance of their own in the 23rd minute when Augustine Kwem unleashed a powerful shot from range, but the Nigerian saw his effort sail wide of target.
Buthelezi was then called into action two minutes later when he quickly came off his line to get to the ball first to prevent Dolly from scoring.
At the other end, Brandon Petersen came to his side’s rescue in the 32nd minute after he produced a great save to deny Orebotse Mongae’s shot at goal before Kwem saw his shot deflect off Ngezana and out for a corner a minute later.
Samir Nurkovic had a chance to hand Amakhosi the lead just before the break, but the Serbian striker’s header was punched away by the Galaxy keeper as the goalless game went into the break.
Although Chiefs started the second half off brightly, it was Galaxy who threatened early on but Mlungisi Mbunjana blazed his effort from distance wide of goal.
Alexander should have given Amakhosi the lead just after the hour mark but the striker guided his diving header wide of target.
Baxter opted to bring on fresh legs when he made a triple substitution in the 65th minute as Daniel Cardoso, Sabelo Radebe and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo came on to replace Baccus, Dube and Ngezana, respectively.
Buthelezi once again came to his side’s rescue in the 76th minute as he made a great save to keep out Ngcobo’s effort from distance.
Galaxy had a chance to win the game with four minutes left to play, but Wayde Lekay saw his strike comfortably saved by Petersen in goal for Amakhosi.
Ngcobo almost won the game for Chiefs deep into stoppage time but the Amakhosi midfielder fired his effort against the upright, with the match ending all square at the FNB Stadium.
