Orlando Pirates suffered a 2-0 defeat by SuperSport United in their final game of the season on Monday evening to finish in sixth place.
Pirates were looking for a strong finish to the season to seal a spot in the Caf Confederation Cup but needed to win by five clear goals.
They almost got off to the perfect start when Kabelo Dlamini picked out Kwame Peprah, who blazed over the target.
Things took a turn in the 19th minute, though, as Makaringe headed into his own net from the corner to hand the visitors the lead.
The Sea Robbers looked for an immediate response but Peprah’s strike came cannoning off the upright 10 minutes before the break.
The Soweto giants were struggling to break down their opponents as they turned to their bench, bringing on Terrence Dzvukamanja for Makaringe.
Matters got worse for Pirates just after the hour mark as Thamsanqa Gabuza was brought down by Jele, who was shown a straight red card.
Ghampani Lunugu stepped up but had his spot kick saved by Richard Ofori. However, a retake was needed after the goalkeeper came off his line and the SuperSport forward managed to convert on the second attempt.
The Buccaneers still had the possession as they looked to pull a goal back in the closing stages, but SuperSport did well to hold out for the win and a clean sheet, sealing eighth spot in the process.
