Cameroon will rely on duo Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Frank Zambo Anguissato to help them gain the same success as their predecessors did in 1990 when they reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

Rigobert Song chose his team late on Wednesday. Perhaps the only surprise was that defender Michael Ngadeu, who was a key part of the team that won the African Cup of Nations for the fifth time in 2017, didn’t make the cut.

Song, who has played in four World Cup finals and is one of only two players (the other is Zinedine Zidane) to have been sent off twice in football’s biggest tournament, has a good chance of leading them to the next round.

Choupo-Moting, who is 33 years old, has been on fire for Bayern. In his last eight games, he has scored nine goals for the German champions.

Anguissa, who is 26 years old, has been just as important for Napoli as they have led Serie A and won their Champions League group, beating Liverpool in the process.

Cameroon’s first game in Group G is on November 24 against Switzerland. Four days later, they play Serbia, and on December 2, they face the toughest team in the group, Brazil.

Here is Cameroon’s squad in full:
