Germany winger Leroy Sane has been ruled out of his side’s opening World Cup encounter against Japan with a knee injury.

The German Football Association (DFB) tweeted on Tuesday that the Bayern Munich forward would not be playing.

The former Manchester City winger didn’t show up to Germany’s last practice before their game against Japan on Wednesday.

The DFB hasn’t said anything about what happened to Sane.

Sane was in good shape for Bayern going into the World Cup. He had scored ten goals and set up six others in 19 games across all competitions this season.

The rest of Germany’s 26-person team, led by Hansi Flick, trained on Tuesday and are eligible to play in the game.
