The DHL Stormers claimed an impressive 40-8 bonus point victory against the Emirates Lions in an entertaining Vodacom United Rugby Championship clash at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday evening.
Both teams tried to run the ball as much as possible, but it was the Capetonians’ better support play and options that helped them score three tries in the first half and lead 19–3 at halftime.
The Emirates Lions had some of the ball, but when they went on the attack, they sometimes didn’t know what to do and made too many mistakes when they were under pressure.
After halftime, they went after the DHL Stormers with a more direct attack. After 48 minutes, Henco van Wyk scored a well-taken try wide out after a tap kick penalty near the home team’s tryline.
The Johannesburgers took part in the exciting local derby, but their try was taken away because the visitors had a slight knock-on. That took away any chance they had of winning, and then DHL Stormers wing Angelo Davids ran half the length of the field for his second try, which ended the game.
Deon Fourie did a great job at the breakdown for the Springboks, and No. 8 Hacjivah Dayimani was voted Man of the Match.
Dayimani was often on the sidelines, using his speed and size to put pressure on the visitors with his ball carrying and great cover play. The dynamic loose forward’s run from deep in his own half set up the DHL Stormers’ bonus point try, and the home team won with six tries to one.
With the win, the DHL Stormers, the defending champions of the Vodacom URC, remained unbeaten in Cape Town in 2022.
