Usman Khawaja was left on 195 runs not out as rain once again delayed play as Australia build an impressive first innings total of 475 for four in 131 overs on the second day of the third and final test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday.

Khawaja scored an unbeaten 195, which was his highest Test score, while Steven Smith hit his 30th hundred.

Day two was cut short due to rain as Australia ended the day on 475-4, with Matt Renshaw still not out. Australia are up 2-0 in the series and will want to win all three games.

Khawaja and Smith put up a score of 209 runs together, and Travis Head pushed the lead home with a fast 70 off of just 59 balls. This put the visitors back in a tough spot.

Khawaja, who was on fire, beat his previous best score of 174, which he got in 2015 against New Zealand in Brisbane.

Smith did more than his share. He passed Bradman’s record of 29 Test tons with a beautiful pullshot off Anrich Nortje to the boundary ropes, giving him a hundred in his home country after 190 balls.

Two balls later, he was out for 104 when he accidentally chipped a catch back to Keshav Maharaj. This was the left-arm spinner’s first catch of the series.

Along the way, Smith passed Michael Clarke to become Australia’s fourth-highest run scorer in Tests with 8,647 runs, after Ricky Ponting, Allan Border, and Steve Waugh.

Smith, in his 92nd Test match, has an average of 60.89, putting him second only to the immortal Bradman (99.94). Only Ponting (41) and Waugh (32) have scored more Test centuries for Australia.
