Manchester United booked their place in the finals of the Carabao Cup following their 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest and a 5-0 win on aggregate.
Anthony Martial and Fred scored for Ten Hag’s team in the last 17 minutes of the second leg of the semi-final. This set up a February 26 match between United and Newcastle at Wembley.
Since Jose Mourinho won the last trophy for United in 2017, three managers have left the club.
But Ten Hag is now just one game away from ending that losing streak in his first season in charge.
“I think we have a good squad so we have to demand and control the high standards,” said the Dutchman. “You have to bring that every game.
“We are Manchester United. When you are a United player you have to match the standards.”
The Red Devils did their damage in the first leg, which they won 3-0 at the City Ground last week. Ten Hag was able to change his team because United is still in four competitions.
He made six changes to the team that beat Reading 3-1 in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday. Marcus Rashford was one of the players who didn’t make the team.
Before halftime, Wout Weghorst came close to breaking the tie, but his header hit the post instead of going in. After Ten Hag made some changes at the hour mark, the game got more interesting.
The former Ajax manager was given a small budget for the January transfer window. This was because he had already spent over £200 million ($247 million) on loan signings of Weghorst, Marcel Sabitzer, and Jack Butland in the summer.
But Jadon Sancho’s return comes at the perfect time to give United more ways to attack.
The England player had been out of action since October because of both mental and physical problems. He came back just after the hour mark.
Rashford and Martial were brought in along with Sancho, and they were noticed right away.
“We have had to make lots of compromises in the season so far so hopefully now they are all available,” added Ten Hag. “If you want to win trophies, you need them all to be available. You saw tonight you can bring a new dynamic off the bench.”
Rashford’s first shot was blocked, and Martial scored the first goal after it.
Three minutes later, it was 2-0 when Rashford set up Fred, who scored into an empty net with the easiest of finishes.
Newcastle, which is on a great run, will be a much tougher test, but United defender Luke Shaw thinks that Ten Hag’s team is on the way to winning something.
“It’s extremely pleasing but there’s no point going to a final if we don’t win it. It’s where we want to be,” said the England international.
“We want to get this club back to where it should be which is winning trophies. Newcastle are an extremely good team but it’s a big moment for us in where we want to go.”
