Orlando Pirates have paid tribute to former Buccaneers captain John Moeti, who passed away on Monday at the age of 55.
Moeti formed part of the Pirates squad that won the 19995 Caf Champions League title and was a member of the Bafana Bafana team that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 55-year-old earned 29 caps for the South African national team, while also turning out for Pirates and SuperSport United, respectively.
The Soweto giants resulted the following statement on the matter which reads as follows:
It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of John Moeti, fondly known as “Dungi,” a former player and captain of Orlando Pirates Football Club.
John was more than just a player; he was leader of men.
John was a prime example of a soccer player who defied the odds. Despite his small stature, John was a powerhouse on the field, exhibiting unmatched energy and tenacity. He was known for his ability to dominate the midfield, breaking up opposition attacks and launching his own with ease. Despite his quiet demeanour, John was a competitor, never backing down from a challenge and always giving his all for the team.
During his time at the club (between 1994 and 1999), John’s relentless work ethic, combined with his natural talent, made him one of the most valued midfielders in the country. His passion for the game, unwavering commitment, and guidance on and off the field was exemplary.
From all of us at Orlando Pirates Football Club, we convey our heartfelt and deepest sympathy to the Moeti Family and pledge our profound moral support.
We supplicate that God gives the family fortitude at this moment of extreme grief and pain.
