The Proteas removed the top four West Indies batsmen at the start of their first innings on the second day of the second Test against South Africa in Johannesburg on Thursday.
At lunch, West Indies were 73-4 in response to South Africa’s 320 all out at the Wanderers Stadium.
The day began positively for the tourists. After the hosts resumed their innings on 311 for seven, it took them only three overs to take the final three wickets.
But the West Indies began poorly when Tagenarine Chanderpaul was run out for one by South African captain Temba Bavuma’s direct hit from cover.
Captain of the West Indies, Kraigg Brathwaite, scored 17 runs before being caught at first slip off a lifter from Kagiso Rabada.
Gerald Coetzee then took the wickets of Jermaine Blackwood, who was caught behind for six, and Raymon Reifer, who was caught bat and pad at short leg for 15 runs.
Heinrich Klaasen chased a wide ball from Kyle Mayers before Alzarri Joseph took the last two wickets with short-pitched deliveries to quickly end South Africa’s innings.
South Africa lost their final eight wickets for 72 runs, including a collapse on Wednesday afternoon.
