Manchester United crashed out of the Europa League after they fell to a 3-0 defeat on Thursday with Sevilla beating them 5-2 on aggregate to reach the semi-finals.
The record six-time champions played much better than Erik ten Hag’s team, which made a lot of mistakes after scoring two own goals in the first leg.
Harry Maguire had one of these bad moments, and then he had another when he lost the ball on the edge of his own area and Youssef En-Nesyri scored right away to break the tie.
The second goal was scored by Loic Bade from a corner kick in the first minute of the second half. Jose Luis Mendilibar’s team had earned their lead, which they defended well.
En-Nesyri scored his second goal into an empty net after David de Gea, the custodian for United, put the ball in front of him. The Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium crowd went wild, and it was a very exciting night.
Sevilla will play the Italian powerhouses Juventus in the semi-finals. The Old Lady beat Sporting Lisbon 2-1 on aggregate, putting them in the semi-finals.
Ten Hag said that his “unacceptable” team didn’t have as much heart as the other team.
“We have to be better, it’s not about playing skills, it’s about character, to be composed and have desire and passion — they had more willingness to win and it can’t be, I think that’s unacceptable,” the coach told reporters.
“Even though they are a great team and the ambience was also great, with a lot of positive energy in the stadium, we have to deal with it, we have to do better.”
Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw were coming back from injuries and started the game on the bench for Ten Hag.
With the stadium rocking, Sevilla went all out for the game, and Maguire scored quickly to give them the lead.
Due to injuries to Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, Ten Hag had no choice but to put the Englishman in the middle of the defence alongside Victor Lindelof.
Maguire rolled the ball back to custodian De Gea and asked to get it from him again, even though three Sevilla players were buzzing around him.
Erik Lamela, who used to play for Tottenham, stole the ball from Maguire as he tried to pass it. En-Nesyri took control of the situation and put the ball past De Gea at his near post.
United tried to come back, but without Bruno Fernandes, their best player, they didn’t have many good chances.
Sevilla thought they had scored a second goal when Lucas Ocampos rammed the ball into the back of the net to get the Pizjuan going again, but VAR showed that Marcos Acuna was offside in the lead-up.
The home team looked like the Europa League pros they are, as shown by their great record, rather than like their team at home, which is fighting to stay up.
