Manchester United defeated Brighton & Hove Albion on penalties at Wembley Stadium on Sunday to set up an FA Cup final against Manchester City.

After Solly March missed the winning penalty kick, Victor Lindelof scored it, and Erik ten Hag’s team won 7-6. This means they are still on track for a domestic cup double.

The semi-final, which was played in front of more than 81,000 people, ended 0-0 after extra time. Neither team had the skill to break the tie.

The result means that in the first-ever FA Cup final between the two rivals, United will have the chance to stop City from winning the treble of the Champions League, the Premier League, and the FA Cup. This would be the first time that City has tried to win the treble.

But the Red Devils, who ended a six-year trophy drought when they won the League Cup earlier this season, will need to play better if they want to beat Pep Guardiola’s red-hot team.

“On Thursday I saw a team I didn’t recognise but today we went back to usual,” Ten Hag told the BBC, referring to their Europa League horror show against Sevilla.

“I could see determination and resilience. We fought for every yard and competed in every battle. We had good chances.”

Harry Maguire was suspended, so Luke Shaw took his place at centre back. Jadon Sancho and Marcel Sabitzer were replaced by Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes after Thursday’s 3-0 loss in Spain, which meant a 5-2 loss overall in the Europa League quarter-finals.

United beat Brighton in a replay of the FA Cup final 40 years ago. Brighton had won the last two league games between the teams, and they came to Wembley on a high after beating Chelsea the week before.

The south-coast club took the lead and had an early chance to score when Antony tripped Kaoru Mitoma at the edge of the box in the sixth minute.

Alexis Mac Allister, who won the World Cup with Argentina, hit a good curling shot that David De Gea did well to stop. Julio Enciso then fired a shot that went wide.
