IPL champions Chennai Super Kings have announced that skipper MS Dhoni is “doing well” after his knee surgery.
The recently concluded Indian Premier League season was played with the former India captain’s left knee heavily strapped.
“The surgery has been done in Mumbai and he is well,” Kasi Viswanathan, the Chennai Super Kings chief executive, told AFP. “The recovery process will take its time.”
Chennai defeated the 2022 IPL champion Gujarat Titans by five wickets in a last-ball thriller in Ahmedabad that lasted until after 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
After widespread rumours that Dhoni might retire, he hinted that he might play “one more season” as a “gift” to fans.
Dhoni is India’s most successful Test captain, having won two World Cups during a glittering career.
He retired from international duty in 2020 but continued to play in the IPL, despite a bad knee and a lacklustre season at the crease.
A source at Mumbai’s Kokilaben hospital told Press Trust of India on Thursday that Dhoni had a successful operation and would be released “within a day or two.”
“He would be resting for a few days before his extensive rehabilitation starts,” it said.
“It is now expected that he would have enough time to get fit to play in the next IPL,” the report added.
