Manchester City won their first-ever Champions League title after beating Inter Milan 1-0 at the Atatürk Olimpiyat in Istanbul to complete the treble.

Midway through the second half at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium, Bernardo Silva sent a pass back to Rodri, who then scored. This was the winning goal in a game in which City’s usual rhythm was thrown off and Kevin De Bruyne got hurt.

Erling Haaland, who scored 52 goals this season, hasn’t scored in five straight games, but City still had enough to beat teams that nobody thought would get this far in the first place.

City is the first English team to win a treble since Manchester United in 1999. They have already won the Premier League five times in six years, and they also won the FA Cup.

In the same month 24 years ago, City beat Gillingham on penalties to win the English third-tier play-off final.

Now, they are the best team in England, and two years after losing to Chelsea in their first final, they have won the biggest prize in European club football.

Sheikh Mansour, the club’s owner, made a rare appearance at a City game to watch his team win the match. In the years since he bought the club in 2008, City has gone from being an average team to a powerhouse.

Guardiola joins an elite group of coaches who have won the Champions League three times. This is twelve years after Barcelona last won it.

But after beating RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid to get to the final, City didn’t have it easy against Inter. Federico Dimarco and Romelu Lukaku, who came on as a substitute, both came close to tying the game late.

Inter had hoped to pull a surprise and win the trophy for the fourth time. Even though it didn’t work out, Simone Inzaghi’s team will be back in the competition next year.

If Guardiola’s team wins, it will add to the three titles United has won, making Manchester the second city after Milan to have two different winners of the competition.

Last year’s Champions League final at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium was much more exciting.

In 2005, Liverpool won here after coming back from being down three goals to AC Milan to tie 3-3 and then win on penalties.

A year after chaos overshadowed the final at the Stade de France in Paris, it went off without a hitch, even though the stadium was about 25 kilometres west of the centre of Istanbul, which made it hard for fans to get there.

City expected Inter to come out and try to stop them, which is why Nathan Ake started in defence instead of Kyle Walker. The first half went just as Inter had planned.

They pushed and nipped at City’s heels, but Guardiola’s team had the best chance when De Bruyne set up Haaland for a shot that Andre Onana saved well.

Then, City got a big blow when De Bruyne, who had to leave the 2021 final because of an injury, left with what looked like a leg injury on minute 36. He was replaced by Phil Foden.

Just as the possibility of extra time and a final that went on past midnight, the game started to get interesting.

Lautaro Martinez had a chance to score when Silva sent a bad pass back towards his own goal, but he missed it. City scored on the 68th minute.

Silva was in the box when Manuel Akanji sent him a pass. Silva’s cutback hit an Inter defender and fell to Rodri, who shot it in.

It was the key Spanish midfielder’s second goal in the competition. He scored the first one in a great way against Bayern in the first leg of the quarter-final.

Inter’s defence was broken, but they almost tied it up right away when Dimarco’s header hit the bar.

In the 88th minute, they almost did it again when Ederson blocked a Lukaku shot that was going in.

City finally won the Champions League after coming so close in recent years.
