Tottenham Hotspur have signed England midfielder James Maddison on a five-year deal for £40 million from Leicester City.

James, who is 26 years old, began his career with Coventry City, where he rose through the youth ranks and made his professional debut in August of 2014. He then joined Norwich City in January of 2016, where he currently plays. He remained on loan with the Sky Blues for the remainder of the 2015-16 season, finishing with 42 appearances and five goals for his hometown club.

Exciting creative midfielder, he made his debut for the Canaries in August 2016 against his former club in an EFL Cup match, before spending the first half of the season on loan with Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen, where he made 17 appearances and scored twice.

Maddison became a key member of Norwich’s team the following year, making 49 appearances across all competitions. He finished the season as the club’s leading scorer with 15 goals and was named the club’s Player of the Year.

James received numerous personal accolades for his outstanding performances throughout the 2017-18 season, including the Championship Young Player of the Month award for January 2018 and the Championship Goal of the Month awards for September 2017 and January 2018. In addition to being nominated for EFL Young Player of the Season, he was also named to the Championship Team of the Year and the PFA Team of the Year.

James joined Leicester City in July 2018 and made his Premier League debut the following month against Manchester United at Old Trafford. He received City’s Young Player of the Season award after a first season in which he made 38 appearances and was involved in 14 goals, and he was awarded for his performance.

Over a five-year period, the Coventry-born playmaker made 203 appearances for Leicester, scoring 55 goals. In 2020/21, he won the Premier League’s Goal of the Month award for September, 2020, with a spectacular curling finish against Manchester City, and he helped the Foxes win the FA Cup in May, 2021.

The 2021/22 season began with a victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield, and the midfielder ultimately had his most productive season to date, scoring 18 goals and registering 12 assists to earn the club’s Player of the Season award. The following season, he added 19 more goal contributions in just 30 appearances for the Foxes.

After representing England at the Under-21 level, James was called up to the senior squad for the first time in October of 2018, making his debut in a UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying match against Montenegro in November of 2019. After being named to Gareth Southgate’s 2022 World Cup squad, he earned his first start for the Three Lions in March 2023 against Ukraine in a Euro 2024 qualifying match at Wembley Stadium.
