Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has been suspended for an extra match and fined £100,000 after his angry reaction to a red card against Newcastle United.
Van Dijk said he did something wrong after he was sent off for a foul on Newcastle’s Alexander Isak during the first half of Liverpool’s 2-1 win at St. James’ Park in August.
The angry Netherlands player didn’t think the tackle was bad enough to get him sent off, so he argued with referee John Brooks instead of leaving the pitch.
Before the international break, Liverpool’s center-back was suspended for the 3-0 win over Aston Villa because he had already been banned for one game.
Now, he will have to serve an extra ban, which will keep him from going with the Reds to Wolves on September 16.
“The defender admitted that he acted in an improper manner and used abusive and insulting words towards a match official after being sent off in the 29th minute and the sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent regulatory commission,” a Football Association statement said on Friday.
