Harry Kane scored from the penalty spot as Bayern Munich commended Manchester United to a 4-3 home win in the Champions League on Wednesday.
United went to Germany with a bad run of form and a lot of problems off the pitch. They didn’t get much help from Bayern, who have won their last 20 Champions League openers.
It was United’s fourth loss in just six games this season in all competitions, and they were unable to bounce back from their embarrassing 3-1 home loss to Brighton in the Premier League last weekend.
Bayern took the lead when the other team’s custodian, Andre Onana, let Leroy Sane’s weak shot roll into the net in the 28th minute. Serge Gnabry added a second when he swept the ball into the net.
Before Kane scored a penalty kick early in the second half, Rasmus Hojlund got one back.
Casemiro’s late goal gave United a brief glimmer of hope for an unlikely comeback against the run of play, but Bayern’s substitute Mathys Tel scored a fourth goal for the home team in the last few minutes of the game.
Casemiro, a Brazilian, scored a second consolation goal for United with the last shot of the game.
“We lost a bit of concentration there in the last five minutes,” Kane, who has now scored five goals in as many starts for Bayern since joining from Tottenham, told TNT Sports.
“Thankfully we were able to hold onto the lead. It’s always great to score. Always room for improvement.
“Really good night tonight, we’ve started the season well and we can improve in certain areas but I feel like we are building towards that.”
After Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen played to a 2-2 draw in Istanbul on Wednesday, Bayern moved to the top of the early Group A table.
This weekend, United will play at Burnley, and in a month, they will play Galatasaray at home for their second Champions League game.
“After my mistake we lost control of the game. It’s a difficult situation for us, for me,” admitted Onana.
“The team were one down because of that mistake. I have to learn from it and be strong.”
Ten Hag said before the game that the problems would teach his team to “focus on the process.”
They took control of the ball early on and put Bayern on the back foot.
Bayern would score first, though, because Kane and Sane worked well together and Onana made a mistake.
Sane got away from his defender and passed the ball to Kane. Kane then sent the ball back to the former Manchester City winger.
Sane slid the ball towards the goal, but Onana couldn’t stop it and it trickled into the net.
Bayern was happy while Onana was lying sad on the ground at the Allianz Arena.
If Bayern’s first goal was a combination of teamwork and luck, Jamal Musiala was the main reason why their second goal was so good.
The 20-year-old midfielder, who was born and raised in England, picked up the ball near the halfway line and dribbled towards the goal, avoiding several United defenders before setting up Gnabry.
After a solid but unspectacular start, United was down 2-0 when the former Arsenal forward slammed the ball into the goal.
The visitors did give their travelling fans hope just after halftime, when United picked up a bad back pass from Musiala and Marcus Rashford found summer signing Hojlund, whose deflected shot got past custodian Sven Ulreich.
But United’s hope didn’t last long, as a VAR review showed that Christian Eriksen had fouled the ball in the box.
United complained about the call, even though Eriksen was clearly trying to pull his arm away and didn’t have much time to do so. However, Kane took the penalty kick and scored.
Late in the game, Casemiro scored twice and Mathys Tel scored once, but Bayern was never really in danger of losing the three points.
