Newcastle United booked their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-final after cruising to a comfortable 3-0 victory over holders Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Newcastle’s biggest away victory over their hosts in 97 years came from goals from substitute Miguel Almiron and Lewis Hall, who scored his first goal for the team, in the first half. On the hour, Joe Willock scored on his own to send Newcastle into the quarterfinals.

For Manchester United and Ten Hag, who have lost eight of their first 15 games for the first time since the 1962–63 season, it was yet another desperate day.

Three days prior, the home team had been humiliated at home by Manchester City by three goals; once again, their vulnerabilities were brutally revealed.

At halftime, Diogo Dalot was changed because he was unable to follow Almiron’s right-wing surge for the first goal.

Casemiro, the returning Brazilian midfielder, did not show up for the second half, presumably because Ten Hag was not impressed with the former Real Madrid player.

Hall scored his second goal with a first-time volley in response to Harry Maguire’s headed clearance. Willock’s attempt was identical to Hall’s, finding the bottom corner after Sofyan Amrabat lost possession on the halfway line and he was free to run 30 yards without obstruction before shooting.

Manchester United’s players could have used shirts large enough to cover their heads in a week when the size of their uniform has been called into question. They were jeered off at the end of both halves for the second straight game.

After ending a nearly six-year trophy drought in February with a victory over Newcastle at Wembley, Manchester United’s form has collapsed spectacularly.

Before leading the team to victory in the EFL Cup final, Ten Hag had lost six of his first 40 games. Since then, they have lost 13 of 36.

Similar to what happened to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer two seasons prior, his team’s decline has come as a complete surprise, considering that they won trophies, finished third the previous campaign, and advanced to the FA Cup final.

Throughout three transfer windows, Ten Hag has spent more than £350 million. Six of his acquisitions concluded the game, while five of them began it. Though it could be argued that custodian Andre Onana was innocent of all three Newcastle goals, none really stood out.

The best chance for the home team was wasted when Anthony Martial, who was only six yards out in the centre of the goal, appeared to pull out of a header after hearing a call from Mount behind him. The opportunity vanished as Mount was unable to maintain control.

Not that Newcastle’s supporters, who took great pleasure in their opponents’ discomfort, are concerned about the problems at Old Trafford. They taunted and chanted, ‘You’ll be sacked in the morning,’ and pointed out how many red seats were empty before the final whistle.
