Percy Tau’s dream of a meeting with Manchester City in the FIFA Club World Cup final is over after Al Ahly succumbed to a 2-0 loss to Brazilian side Fluminense on Monday night.
The South American champions will now meet either Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds or City in Friday’s final in Jeddah.
Tau had some complicity in his side’s loss, he gave away a penalty for Jhon Arias to score Fluminense’s opener with a clumsy tackle in the box, before John Kennedy added a late second for the Brazilians.
Ahly will rue several missed opportunities as the speed of Kahraba and Tau saw them launch quick counter-attacks without an end product.
Kahraba was denied from two clearcut early chances, first by Samuel Xavier who made a heroic goal-line clearance, while goalkeeper Fabio made a brilliant one-handed save to palm round the post a close-range header right before the break.
Tau then forced a brilliant save from Fabio as he was agonisingly close to giving his side the lead.
But after Arias slotted the penalty just inside the right post after 71 minutes, the game swung in the South American club’s favour and Ahly could not find a way back into the contest.
Tau had a big chance to level, but his header was into the goalkeeper’s hands from point-blank range.
Not the best of nights out for the Bafana Bafana winger, who showed all his skill and creativity until it came to finishing in the box.
