Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has given an update on Makhehlene Makhaula after the midfielder collapsed on the pitch during their Nedbank Cup clash against Hungry Lions.
The Buccaneers went on to defeat the Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit 4-0 at the Orlando Stadium thanks to a brace by Tshegofatso Mabasa, an own goal by Morena Monaheng and a goal from Monnapule Saleng on Saturday
However, their victory over Lions was overshadowed by Makhaula, who collapsed on the pitch in the first half despite being challenged.
As a result, the Buccaneers medical team rushed onto the field to attend to him and he was subsequently stretchered off the pitch and replaced by just before the break.
The Spaniard has since revealed that Makhaula is recovering in hospital after collapsing in their win over Hungry Lions.
“What I can tell you is coming from the half-time and now I spoke to the doctor and the guy seems to be okay but I don’t want to say anything because I don’t really know,” Riveiro told SuperSport TV.
“It was a shocking moment for all of us, good reaction from the doctors, for a moment it was not a joke what was happening there and when we went to halftime.
“The doctors and people from the club told us that he’s doing well, he’s conscious and talking and I’m just looking to go again and see what’s the situation right now,” he said.
