Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes were dealt a huge blow after they suffered a 2-0 defeat against Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

The Gunners were expecting a big encounter following Liverpool’s shocking home loss to Crystal Palace, but Villa manager Unai Emery made a successful return to his old team, and Arsenal were very disappointing and outclassed.

It was lucky for Arsenal to hold a draw for such a long time against the formidable visitors, who earned a well-earned victory to jump three points clear of Tottenham in fourth place despite having played one more game.

The only surprise was that Villa didn’t take the lead until six minutes remained in regular time. Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins struck the crossbar in either half before Leon Bailey broke the tie with a low finish at the far post.

Leandro Trossard’s incredible stop by Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez kept Arsenal out of the game in the first half. However, Watkins’ calm finish over David Raya in the 87th minute sealed the victory for the visitors.

The incumbent champions, led by Pep Guardiola, finished the weekend flawlessly. They are now two points ahead of Arsenal, who are ahead of Liverpool in third place on goal differential.
