Manchester United have confirmed the sacking of manager Erik ten Hag following the club’s lacklustre start to the season.

After losing to West Ham on Sunday for the fourth time in nine league games, United fell to a pitiful 14th place in the standings. They have only won one of their last eight games across all competitions.

“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager,” said a club statement.

“Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”

The Dutch manager Ten Hag had already overseen United’s worst start to an English top-flight season since the 1989–1990 campaign prior to the defeat to West Ham.

Since United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe kept the 54-year-old Ten Hag at Old Trafford after the team’s FA Cup final victory against Manchester City at Wembley in May, his job has been under constant scrutiny in recent weeks.
