Orlando Pirates captain Innocent Maela says their experience in the Nedbank Cup played a huge role in helping them overcome Richards Bay in the last 32.
The 32-year-old played the full 90 minutes to help his side secure a 3-1 victory over the Natal Rich boys at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday.
A brace from Patrick Maswanganyi and a goal from Tshegofatso Mabasa saw the Buccaneers advance to the last 16 of the competition.
Jose Riveiro’s chargers will now turn their attention to a mouth-watering Soweto derby clash against rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Betway Premiership on Saturday.
“It was a tricky match and we knew the conditions would not be in our favour but I think the team played well; I think we soildered on,” Maela said.
“I think the experience we had throughout the years helped us so much today.
“As defending champions, we knew the level we’ve set for ourselves, but for now its just for us keep humble and keep going.”
