Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro believes his side fought hard and deserved to walk away with all three points in the Soweto derby.

The Buccaneers claimed the bragging rights in the Soweto derby following their 1-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs

A stoppage-time penalty by Patrick Maswanganyi handed Pirates maximum points at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

The win takes Pirates up to second place in the league standings with 18 points after 12 matches.

Meanwhile, Amakhosi have dropped down to fifth place in the Betway Premiership standings with 21 points from 15 games.

Riveiro shared his thoughts on the penalty his side received in stoppage-time and stated he cannot comment on the matter; the referee’s word is final.

“Not really (watched replays), I watched now in the bench in the monitor,” Riveiro told SuperSport TV after the game.

“It’s difficult to say, I’m not gonna say anything, if the referee says it’s a penalty in extra-time, it must be very clear.

“To create most clear chances, to put the goalkeeper in trouble and yeah we had to work hard for the points, we had to and we did it.

“I think we had clear chances especially in the first-half, with Tshego (Mabasa), (Evidence) Makgopa as well, Hotto gave us a different dimension in the last minutes. These games are not usually tight, no good football, not many chances.

“We had a beautiful derby last season a few months ago but it’s not usual to see these kind of games. Today it was more tight but I think I’m fair today to say my team deserves the three points.”
