Daniel Agger, the former Liverpool centre-back, has announced his retirement from football. 

The 31-year-old Dane spent the bulk of his career at Anfield as he represented the Reds for eight seasons between 2006 and 2014, having joined the side from his boyhood club Brondby.

Signed by Rafael Benitez, the player made 232 appearances for Liverpool, picking up a League Cup trophy with the side in 2012. The player’s career comes to an end following a long spell of injury troubles.

Agger was a popular figure at Anfield and was known to boast a tattoo proclaiming ‘YNWA’ across his knuckles.

The player made a return to Brondby in 2014, but has now opted to bow-out of the Danish Superliga club, and football for good.

Agger managed to make 71 appearances for Denmark over the course of his career, having represented his country over an 11 year spell.

He broke news of his decision to retire over Twitter.
