Lionel Messi has blasted his country’s football association following a delay in the team’s flight ahead of their Copa America final against Chile on Monday.
The Albiceleste swept aside the United States 4-0 in their semi-final clash on Wednesday and are set to face Chile in the final for the second time in two years.
The side, which arrived at the Newark Liberty International Airport on Thursday evening, were delayed in their take-off, sparking a complaint by the Barcelona star, who turns 29 today.
‘Once again waiting on a plane to leave for our destination,’ Messi wrote on Instagram. ‘What a disaster the AFA are. My god!’
The AFA, meanwhile, were quick to blame weather conditions for the delay, while they also distanced themselves from direct involvement with the side’s travel plans.
‘The Argentine Football Federation informs that the flight which is transporting the national team to New Jersey suffered a delayed departure due to weather issues,’ read the statement.
‘Also, the AFA advises that all of the scheduled times of the transfers are designated by the organisers of the Copa America Centenario.’
Messi currently lies second in the race for the Golden Boot in the tournament having netted on five occasions, one goal short of the mark set by current top scorer Eduardo Vargas of Chile.
The game will be played at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Kick-off is at 02:00.
