Cape Town City owner John Comitis has explained the departure of key striker Collins Mbesuma from his newly re-branded club.
The Zambian, who was the top scorer in the Premiership last season, will not don the club’s new colours next term, though Comitis insists the player’s departure was not his doing.
‘I inherited a club that had existing contracts,’ Comitis told KickOff.
‘All the contracts that were existing in this current season – all those players are here. All those contracts have been respected by ourselves as of 1 June.’
The former Ajax Cape Town shareholder insists the previous owners of the club called all the shots regarding contracts.
‘Players that are not here either had an end to their contract or there had to be a renewal of the option to their contract, and that decision was made by the previous owners,’ he explained.
Mbesuma is yet to sign a contract with a new PSL team since leaving Black Aces.
Cape Town City began their preseason preparation on Monday under new head coach Eric Tinkler.
