MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi has revealed that Free State Stars will now be known as Swallows FC.
Moroka Swallows will now make their return to the Absa Premiership following the purchase of Ea Lla Koto’s top-flight football status once the PSL confirms the deal.
Lesufi, who has been part of the consortium leading Swallows’ negotiations in recent weeks, was addressed the club’s supporters in Soweto on Sunday, where he revealed the Dube Birds’ new name, reports KickOff.com.
‘If we can come with everything that the PSL requested by Wednesday, we will have a new team called Swallows FC,’ Lesufi said.
Lesufi insists that Swallows will honour their ABC Motsepe League campaign but it will be a development side for the Absa Premiership club.
‘Remember we agreed that we will honour our fixtures in the ABC League with a development side because we need to identify talent there,’ he added.
‘You must also remember that the Moroka Swallows of Leon Prins left us with a lot of credit, so we must make sure that we start in good way. When we play on August 23, we will use the name Swallows FC.
‘We will be busy sorting out all the problems so that we don’t transfer them up here. So when everything is sorted out there, we can then reclaim the name, but now we are moving ahead with Swallows FC.’
The MEC confirmed that the club will continue to use the Dobsonville Stadium and will use Ellis Park Stadium for big teams.
‘The home of Swallows is Dobsonville and when we play bigger teams, we are proposing to use Ellis Park Stadium.’
