Banyana Banyana suffered a 4-1 loss against New Zealand in an international friendly match played at the Estadiu Luso Brasileiro in Rio de Janeiro.
The international friendly between the two sides was their final preparations ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
After their spirited display against the USA earlier this month, where they were defeated 1-0, much was expected from the national team, reports Safa.net.
Banyana Banyana’s head coach Vera Pauw made three changes to the team bringing in Bambanani Mbane, Leandra Smeda and Mamello Makhabane for Noko Matlou, Shiwe Nogwanya, and Robyn Moodaly respectively.
Mbane made her first start to the Banyana Banyana squad while Makhabane made a return to the starting line-up after being sidelined through injury.
However, it was New Zealand who made a bright start to the match as they took the lead in the 14th minute through a Hannah Wilkinson header. Banyana Banyana were dealt another blow in the 32nd minute when they conceded their second goal by Amber Hearn.
The South African coach looked to changed things up in the second-half by making several changes but they could not bring the desired result. New Zealand then extended their lead making the score line 3-0 with Annalie Longo coming off the bench to score midway through the second half.
Banyana striker Jermaine Seoposenwe pulled a goal back for the South African side in 65th minute.
Five minutes before the final whistle, New Zealand got their fourth of the game with the goal from Sarah Gregarius.
Pauw side will need to intensify preparations for their opening match against Sweden at the Rio Olympics on August 3.
