Young South African starlet Khanyisa Mayo believes his participation in an international U19 tournament can help him escape his father’s shadow. 

Mayo, who is the son of former Kaizer Chiefs striker Patrick Mayo, currently leads the way in the scoring charts with five goals to his name.

Starring for SuperSport United’s reserve side, the 17-year-old looks poised to return for the semi-final of the tournament, where his side will come up against Sporting Lisbon at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

‘Since I have been training and part of the team I have been itching to achieve this goal to make my mark in this tournament, which is to win the top goal scorer award. I’m currently leading the scoring charts,’ Mayo told KickOff.

‘I have been praying to God to score goals and create for the team. And everyone has been doing well throughout the two games I have been playing.’

The player is hopeful he can continue to contribute for the side while he has also admitted he feels the weight of expectation of following in his father’s footsteps.

‘Pressure has always been there. Because people say I must live to my father’s surname which I’m doing, and also making the name for myself, not only using the surname.

‘I’m trying to make my name for myself which people should know that I’m Khanyiso Mayo,’ he concluded.
