Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt has explained that Darren Keet provides stiff competition for Moeneeb Josephs in their goalkeeping department.

The 27-year-old agreed to join the Clever Boys on a one-year deal from Belgian side KV Kortrijk, with the option of extending his deal for a further year.

Hunt has since explained that the reason for the signings, saying the Wits goalkeeping department lacked depth, while Josephs’ age needed to be considered for the future too, reports KickOff.com.

‘Moeneeb is old – 36. He needs competition,’ Hunt said.

‘We saw what happened last year, where he cost us three points and it could have been vital [towards the league chase].

‘We can’t have a situation where we put a 19-year-old if something wrong happens to Moeneeb. We need to be better.’

The former SuperSport United coach insists that he brought in Keet and Kyle Peters to better their goalkeeping department.

‘We need to have two good goalkeepers and we need better competition from the goalkeepers,’ he added.

‘So, yeah, we’ve got three good goalkeepers now and that’s the best I have had.’

SuperSport United will travel to the Royal Bafokeng Stadium when they take on Platinum Stars in their opening Absa Premiership match on August 24.

Kick-off has been set for 19:30.
