Cape Town City midfielder Aubrey Modiba says being called up to the Bafana Bafana squad for the first time is like ‘a dream come true’.
The 21-year-old midfielder was recently named in Shakes Mashaba’s squad for their Afcon qualifier against Mauritania and their Nelson Mandela Challenge clash with Egypt.
Bafana Bafana will take on Les Mourabitones in the first match in Nelspruit at the Mbombela Stadium on September 2, while Mashaba’s men will host the Pharaohs at Orlando Stadium in Soweto on September 6, reports KickOff.com.
The former South African U23 midfielder says that representing Bafana Bafana is ‘a dream come true’ for him after making his way through the ranks of the SA teams.
‘To represent your country is every footballer’s dream and I am very grateful to be selected for these two important matches,’ Modiba said.
‘I can certainly count myself as one of the fortunate footballers to have come through the ranks – U20, U23 and now with Bafana Bafana – and this is indeed a dream come true.’
Modiba insists that being part of the squad has given him confidence and he says he is relishing the chance to make his Bafana Bafana debut.
‘Just being part of the senior squad is a huge vote of confidence and I will certainly do my best should I be given a chance to play against either Mauritania or Egypt,’ he added.
‘The call-up is a result of hard work and dedication, and I would like to thank Nedbank with the Ke Yona Team Search as it is where it all started for me. I believe with the talent we have in this country, more players will emerge from the project.’
Last season for Mpumalanga Black Aces, Modiba assisted three goals from 29 appearances in all competitions and also helped his side to a fourth-place finish in the Absa Premiership, securing their spot in the MTN8 tournament.
